And You Thought the Red Wings Score a Lot of Goals

82-0 Folks.  That's an insane football score, let alone one for ice hockey.  It happened, and there is video evidence to prove it.

Not even in the world of NHL '92 for Sega Genesis can one levy such a beatdown on an opponent.  My best effort from youth was 24 goals by Mario Lemieux himself (in 5 minute periods, mind you).  Only if we extrapolate Sega-generated Mario's unfathomable scoring pace over the course of a full, 60-minute game can we hope to comprehend such a scoring output in real life.

When I first heard about an 82-0 Slovakia victory over Bulgaria, I thought it might just be a case of propoganda manufactured from totalitarian Eastern European regimes.  (Regimes who apparently overestimated the popularity of women's hockey?)  But yet, our friends at Deadspin somehow got their hands on video evidence documenting the surreal blowout.

Deadspin's recap of Slovakia vs. Bulgaria, 82-0.

A one time event?  No, unfortunately for the Bulgarians, it was not.  Before being eliminated from the tournament, they were outscored 192-1 in total.

Dear Olympic Committee:  Please make a special excemption and do whatever it takes to get Bulgaria women's hockey into the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
